You are seeing folk music only in the context of the alleged English Folk Tradition. Have a listen to American Folk Music (Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly) or to Irish and Scottish music......at least half of that is raging against the politics of the time....and the other half is about real people "maybe it was Vietnam or the industrial age"....maybe you don't know anything about music outside a few "maids-a-milking" and a couple of "tra-la-la- lees".. Course it's not your fault..(heavy patronising tone)...you grew up in the age after the English Folk and Dance Society had mutated people's music so that all that was remembered was a vision of an idealised country idyll.....and you are a fat man with a beard......with no doubt a pint of real ale at hand.....well you wouldn't want to be clear-headed or anything now would you?
